There’s plenty of advice online for how candidates should put together a well-written Curriculum Vitae but there seems to be less useful information for employers to know what to look out for in a good résumé.  When reviewing incoming CVs, here are some key factors to look out for in order to identify the strongest candidates for your vacancy:

#1. Relevant experience

The résumé should highlight relevant experience that aligns with the job requirements. Look at past relevant positions, internships, or projects that demonstrate the applicant’s ability to excel in the desired role. Watch out for unexplained gaps and try to get a feeling for whether the CV tells a consistent story of progress that matches your ideal candidate hire profile.

#2. Skills and qualifications

A good CV emphasizes the candidate’s relevant skills and qualifications. It should clearly demonstrate the individual’s expertise and capabilities in areas crucial for the position. In the real world there can sometimes be small gaps between the skills or experience on offer versus your ideal candidate; you need to decide if these can be bridged through external or on-the-job training and support.

#3. Education and certifications

Employers should review the candidate’s educational background and any relevant certifications or courses completed. This information showcases the candidate’s commitment to learning and acquiring new knowledge. It will also likely be required on the Islands for work permit approval purposes.

#4. Achievements and accomplishments

Look for significant achievements and accomplishments mentioned in the résumé. These can be related to previous jobs, side projects, or personal initiatives. Such achievements demonstrate a candidate’s ability to excel and add value.

#5. Communication skills

A well-written résumé is an indication of good communication skills. Look for clear and concise language, proper grammar, and appealing formatting. Effective communication is crucial for working effectively together with colleagues and clients.

#6. Adaptability and flexibility

Employers should gauge the applicant’s adaptability and flexibility. Look for experiences that demonstrate the ability to handle change (such as changing country), work in diverse environments, and learn quickly.

#7. Positive attitude and work ethic

The wording of the CV should reflect a positive attitude towards work and a strong work ethic. Indicators can include references to teamwork, dedication, and/or a history of going the ‘extra mile’.

#8. Attention to detail

Look for evidence of attention to detail throughout the résumé. This includes accurate and consistent formatting, proper spelling and grammar, and coherent organization of information.

#9. Additional qualifications

Employers may also consider additional qualifications such as language skills, advanced degrees, or specific software proficiencies. These can enhance the candidate’s suitability for certain roles or projects.

Notwithstanding all the above, bear in mind that résumés are just one piece of the hiring process, and employers should also consider other factors like interview performance and feedback from references. However, at the end of the day, a well-crafted résumé can provide valuable insight into a candidate’s potential fit for a role with your organisation.
