Everyone has the occasional outbreak of Monday morning blues. Ask ‘Mississippi’ John Hurt – he even wrote a song about it. It’s that sinking feeling that the weekend went by too quickly… and the day ahead doesn’t exactly fill your heart with joy. If you’ve got the blues, here in reverse order are 5 hints to make the first day of the week a little better…

5. Make sure you’re rested and refreshed

Don’t underestimate the effect of tiredness and stress on how you feel on a Monday morning. Maintaining a regular sleep pattern and getting sufficient rest will give you more drive and enthusiasm at the start of the week

4. Eat a healthy breakfast

Avoid sugary cereals that fill you up but then leave you lethargic and irritable as your blood-sugar levels crash. Fresh fruit juices are a great source of natural energy. Healthy protein (rather than fried bacon and sausages) such as yoghurt or eggs also give you a sustained boost of energy throughout the morning, as do complex carbohydrates such as oatmeal or wholemeal bread

3. Start with the tasks you enjoy doing the most

After a relaxing weekend, it’s hard to get moving and motivated on Monday morning. So when you get in the office plan to do the things you enjoy the most. It will give you something to look forward to and should give rise to a lift in morale as you get into the working week

2. Understand why you’re doing what you do

We all need to have a sense of purpose to engage and motivate us and this goes beyond mere monetary reward. Why do you do the job you do? What makes you care about the team around you are the result of your work? Take the chance to reassess the reasons why you chose your current job in the first place and focus on what it is that makes it worthwhile for you to continue

1. Move to the Caribbean!

If the above reasons for being in your current job have changed, or have disappeared– how can you restore them? To feel motivated, you need to understand the true purpose behind your weekly efforts.

That goes beyond your pay cheque. So look ahead
and consider all the possibilities that lie before you.

Yes – we know we’re biased – but have you ever considered what it’s like to live and work in the Caribbean?

You need never suffer from Monday morning blues again!
