The turtle logo was originally created by designer Suzy Soto in 1963. A decade later she sold the rights to use it to the Department of Tourism for the princely sum of $1. Its creator jokingly used to refer to the turtle as Sir and eventually the name stuck. So out of respect nowadays everyone calls him Sir Turtle. The Sir Turtle pirate logo is particularly fitting because the Cayman Islands have a history of being the base for some of the most infamous pirates and buccaneers ever to sail the high seas (such as Blackbeard and Sir Henry Morgan) and because las tortugas (turtles) form an important part of the Islands' coat of arms. Several years later, a scarf was added to the mix and the logo was successfully adopted by Cayman Airways. So now you know! Meet 'Sir Turtle'
