Overview

An archipelago nation made up of approximately 700 islands, of which 40 are populated. The islands cover a geographical area of 100,000 square miles

The largest of the islands are New Providence, where Nassau is located, and Grand Bahama where Freeport is situated. Paradise Island is the location of the world-famous new Atlantis resort and casino.

Currency

The Bahamian dollar is pegged to the US dollar (B$1=US$1). There is no income tax, capital gains tax or inheritance tax in the Bahamas.

Banks

There are approximately 360 financial institutions licensed to conduct banking and trust work in the Bahamas.

Government

The Commonwealth of the Bahamas became independent in 1973. It has a Parliament headed by a Prime Minister (like the UK), supported by a Senate and House of Assembly (like the US)

Radio/TV

The Bahamas Broadcasting Corporation is government-owned. Satellite television programming is also widely available
